Frequently Asked Questions
EMPLOYMENT SCREENING & VERIFICATION

QUESTION: Do we have to pay or not, to get past drug testing and accident information from a previous employer? This is for an employee who worked at large a truckload carrier. They sent a fax verifying the employment dates but all drug/alcohol and accident info is only available from an on-line driver verification service. My biggest problem with this is putting my credit information into their system. I do not do anything on the internet and as it so happens I am battling some fraud from a previous employee who used the internet to access one of our checking accounts. So this is something I just don’t want to do!
ANSWER: The following answer and guidance comes straight from the FMCSA. Document the attempts to get the background info from the previous carrier and place that in the DQ file (at least three attempts is a prudent and common industry practice). There is nothing in the regulations that requires the carrier to do more than that. We have had this problem with carriers in the past. If you wish to jump into the fine print of most of these on-line for fee services, there is still a way to get the info for free, especially the drug testing info.
