No Relief in Sight for State Budget Deficit
Ever since the 2010 Legislative Session kicked off January 11, Governor Jan Brewer and legislative leaders have spent countless weeks attempting to reduce the huge deficit between revenues and expenses for the remainder of fiscal year 2010 (ending June 30) and for FY 2011. Gov. Brewer succeeded in persuading the Legislature to refer a temporary increase of one cent in the state sales tax to the voters, with May 18 set for the vote. Watch this page for updates.
2010 Elections Already in Play
Even though the Arizona primary won't occur until August, term limits and an open congressional seat are having their impact. Of the current 30-member State Senate, 16 members will be gone in November 2010 either because of term limits or because they have decided not to seek re-election. Attorney General Terry Goddard has announced for and appears well-positioned to win the Democratic nomination for governor, while the Republican field includes State Treasurer Dean Martin, former Board of Regents chairman John Munger, several lesser-known candidates and the incumbent, Governor Jan Brewer. District 3 Republican Congressman John Shadegg announced he would not run for re-election, prompting several members of the Legislature to resign in order to compete for the open seat.
